Set in a British colony on the equator in the 1950’s, The Red ‘MG’ starts out as a reminiscence, but quickly turns into a saga about a disillusioned young Englishman who has an ‘awakening’ when he is posted by his employer to a remote township in the tropics. Having blotted his copybook at home, Keith Pilkington, a Cambridge graduate and debonair London party-goer, is sent to Kuching in Sarawak, where, to his surprise, he falls in love with the jungle. He also falls in love with a local, native girl, Mariana de Vegas, who becomes pregnant by him. But Mariana’s father, a violent drunkard and a man full of hate, is enraged by his daughter consorting with a privileged white man and is determined to sabotage their relationship. Meanwhile, Keith’s glamorous wife, Stella, has an adventure of her own that adds an unexpected twist to what, at its heart, is a story of personal discovery and salvation.
